Special Worship Services

Mardi Gras Jazz Worship Service

Every year before the season of Lent begins, Willow Grove holds its annual Mardi Gras Jazz Worship Service.  It has been a favorite in the community and congregation.  Willow Grove's pastor, The Rev. Cynthia Cochran-Carney gives perspective on the feast. "Although the current traditions of Mardi Gras in New Orleans seem far from a Christian celebration of God's love for humanity in Jesus Christ, we can reclaim those religious roots and enjoy the rich musical traditions of jazz, gospel and spirituals that give voice to our faith."  So plan to come and listen to our guest jazz musicians and see our children in the parade of decorated masks as we sing "When the Saints Go Marching In."  Your toes will be tapping and your spirit will be soaring as we praise God with jazz.

Good Friday Tenebrae Service

During Holy Week in March or April before Easter

The Good Friday Tenebrae Taize Service of music, prayer and darkness is a service depicting the events that led to Jesus' crucifixion.  Taizé worship grew out of an ecumenical Christian community in France whose music is sung in English and Latin.  A Taizé service includes candlelight, prayers, readings, silence, and singing quiet short songs led by keyboard, flute,  and other instruments.. The service is meditative and offers a wonderful opportunity to be quiet and center on God's love in Christ.  Come as you are -- and listen. As the solemn service progresses, the lighted candles will gradually be extinguished, and finally the congregation will exit in silence and in darkness.  The meaning of Tenebrae is "darkness."  The nailing of our prayers to the cross is also included in this service of prayer and introspection.

Youth Sunday

May or June

Each year the children and youth of Willow Grove Church plan and lead a Sunday morning worship service around a Bible story and theme.  They choose the music.  They plan and act out the skits.  They write and read the prayers.  Many of the young people also play their instruments or sing.  It is inspiring to watch them share their joy as young Christian disciples who are part of this loving church family.  You never know what you will see --- it always is a service full of surprises and profound truth about the God who made us and calls us at every age to be Christ's light in the world.

Music Sunday

Twice each year

Willow Grove Church is committed to celebrating the beauty of the many musical gifts God has blessed us with.  In late Fall and again in late Spring, we dedicate these special worship services featuring inspiring music, both choral and instrumental.  Guided by Willow Grove's award-winning Music Director, Paul DiDario, many artists from Willow Grove Church as well as the community join us for this special event.  Mr. DiDario is a Julliard graduate, a consummate concert pianist, and a devoted music teacher.

Our other special worship services include Christmas Eve, Palm Sunday, Easter, Pentecost, and World Communion.  Watch the church newsletter for more information.
